Fade resistant vs UV resistant vs colorfast
These terms get used almost interchangeably, but they’re not quite the same thing. Fade resistant refers specifically to how well a fabric holds its color under light exposure over time. UV resistant is broader, and often refers to how well a fabric blocks or withstands UV radiation generally, which can include protecting what’s behind it as well as the fabric itself. Colorfast usually refers to a fabric’s resistance to color loss from washing or rubbing, not sun exposure specifically, so a colorfast fabric isn’t automatically fade resistant, and vice versa.
Which fabrics are genuinely fade resistant
The most reliable fade resistance comes from solution-dyed fibers, where color is added during fiber production rather than applied to the surface afterward.
